Obtaining your Illinois Concealed Carry License

If you're thinking about obtaining your Illinois concealed carry license, you might be wondering what you need to do and how to prepare. In this blog post, I'll share with you some tips and insights from my own experience as a licensed instructor and a former law enforcement officer.

First of all, you need to meet the basic eligibility requirements for applying for a concealed carry license in Illinois. These include:

- Being at least 21 years old

- Having a valid FOID card

- Having no felony convictions or domestic violence charges

- Having no mental health issues or substance abuse problems

- Completing 16 hours of approved firearms training

The last requirement is the most important one, because it will determine how well you can handle a firearm and how confident you are in using it for self-defense. That's why you should choose your instructor carefully and make sure they have real world experience and expertise in concealed carry.

Not all instructors are created equal. Some may have only taken a basic course themselves and have little or no practical experience in carrying a firearm. Others may have a military or law enforcement background, but not necessarily in the context of civilian concealed carry. You want to find an instructor who has both the credentials and the skills to teach you what you need to know.

Some of the things you should look for in an instructor are:

- How long they have been teaching concealed carry courses

- How many students they have trained and what kind of feedback they have received

- What kind of curriculum they use and how they tailor it to your needs and goals

- What kind of equipment they provide and what kind of range facilities they use

- How much they charge and what kind of value they offer

You should also ask them about their own concealed carry habits and practices, such as:

- What kind of firearm they carry and why

- What kind of holster they use and how they conceal it

- What kind of ammunition they use and how they store it

- How often they practice and train with their firearm

- How they deal with different scenarios and situations involving concealed carry

These questions will help you gauge their level of competence and credibility, as well as their passion and enthusiasm for teaching. You want to learn from someone who not only knows what they're doing, but also enjoys doing it.

The quality of your training will make a big difference in your ability to carry a firearm safely and effectively. You don't want to skimp on this aspect of your concealed carry journey. You want to invest in yourself and your future by getting the best training possible.
